Over many thousands of years the glacial dam's thickness continued to be eroded. Testimony of the warming Earth and the power of its trapped lake. All the while the water exerted gradual but ever increasing pressure against its interior. Water is also a miner of sorts. Always seeking the lowest point. So it probed and nibbled at the base of the ice dam all along its length.

The coyote concocted a plan. It ran at breakneck speed toward the rabbit which of course dived into its nearest hole. Quickly the coyote changed its course to a hole farther to its left then laid perfectly still on its stomach. Ears cocked forward to listen to the slightest subterranean sound. However, the buck also had sensitive ears. It detected the diminishing racing feet of the coyote and opted to lie down in the burrow dived into. Taking fine advantage of the Doppler effect. Certain the canine was posed over the wrong hole, the rabbit made its move. It exited lair, stood on its rear haunches and squealed loudly in the coyote's direction. One could imagine it was saying, "Hey dog! That was fun, wasn't it?" The coyote snorted, wandered off and satiated its appetite with three quail eggs in a nest it stumbled upon a mile away. Then it hit the jackpot two more miles away. A partially buried day old half eaten carcass of a horse. The coyote enjoyed this meal until a six-strong pack of dire wolves whose kill it was showed up. Having a hatred for coyotes the wolves gave chase intent on killing it. The coyote was forced to take a page from its rabbit prey. Finding a narrow and sufficiently deep rock crevice it dived inside. Dire wolves being rather large at one hundred to one hundred and seventy pound animals couldn't enter the crevice. They did paw at it in an effort to dig the coyote out. The coyote snapped at their paws, even getting a good bite on wolf paws a few times. Eventually the wolves gave up and returned to their half buried horse meat. The coyote meanwhile decided to nap in the crevice and came out at nightfall. It wandered back home and slept on a ledge until dawn. At which time it took its position and awaited for the buck for yet another day of their daily of chase and peekaboo.
